Spells, Decrees & Prayers: Which one should you use?

Spells, decrees and prayers, what’s the difference between them and which one is the best to use? Well let’s first look at what each one and go from there. To begin with, let’s start with what a ‘spell’ really is at its heart.

A ‘spell’ in modern terms could be seen as using the Law of Attraction to bring to you what you want through using tools such as scripting and visualization in a powerful combination to manifest the things you want in life. Of course, everyone’s magical practice is different and unique to them, so some people’s spells might use dolls, candles, crystals or any number of extra tools that add resonance for their spell work. While some people simply use a pen and paper. Other’s still may be so good at it that they work completely on the mental plane. But most practitioners will find it helpful to work in the physical plane when you wish to bring something to you, physically.

So a ‘spell’ is usually written in some form, somewhere and is somewhat of a petition to the universe and to whatever energies you are working with to bring something to you.

A ‘decree’ is lesser known in most magical circles then a spell. But those of you who have studied the old Theosophical works of the Ascended Masters, such as Saint Germain, might be more familiar with the term.

Decrees are much like spells that are said repetitively, like a mantra or an affirmation. They are written in a very positive, dynamic fashion and always from the standpoint that whatever is being ‘decreed’ has already happened. It takes the stand of accepting that what has been asked for has already been given. A decree is used to help the subconscious accept the reality of what you are decreeing for, because without acceptance you can never the thing asked for. I suppose a decree can be seen as way of reprogramming the brain, into accepting a new reality while at the same time, using the Law of Attraction, through your point of focus while saying the decree, to draw that which you are decreeing for, to you in whatever way is meant to be. And a lot of times, we never expect things to come to us the way they do. Which is why a  big part of decrees and spells is about getting your consciousness to the point of accepting that is done. Not from the point of worrying about how it will get done, because then you shift your power of attraction from the manifested reality of what you ask for, to the manifested reality of still wanting and worrying about what you ask for.

Decrees can be given for any reason a spell or prayer is given. I have sometimes explained it to people by saying that it’s a powerful form of prayer. Which it is, but many orthodox people might get ruffled at that.

Moving on to prayers, I think we all have our own idea of what praying is. But in this context, prayer is referencing a plea for help to a higher power. Where a prayer and a decree or spell differ is in the way the asking is approached. In prayer, the supplicant is basically begging God or some greater power, to give them something. Some times it’s done with plea bargaining and sometimes it’s just a heartfelt prayer for the good of someone else. Prayers are as different as the people that give them and they are wonderful things. However they differ from decrees and spells in the way that they ask from a place of need. The prayer is usually worded in a way like,

“Dear God please heal me”

Which implies that whatever you are asking for, you do not yet have. The grammar of the prayer itself shows you the place of attraction for the person praying.

Now in contrast, a decree might look like:

“I AM filled with the Light of God and I AM Perfectly healthy and happy in every way!”

Now that decree, grammatically holds a different vibration as well as provides a different point of attraction for the person saying it. First of all, it uses the sacred and powerful words of “I AM” in the correct manner, by using it to call forth something good. Then it is written in a way that claims the good for the person, already. It puts you in a state of acceptance. It also provides several points of attraction here, which are all good, because every word was carefully chosen for what it calls to itself.

A spell, could be something like writing out a short spell on a piece of paper, like:

“I call upon the Divine Light to increase my health and wealth and happiness in all good and perfect ways! This blessing I accept and I am grateful for! So mote it be!”

You could then light a candle and visualize the Light streaming down from above into your body until you felt a warm tingling throughout your entire body. Then you could burn the paper you wrote the spell on or bury it in the yard under a full moon. Whatever makes it feel more powerful for you, you would do. And this type of spell works very similarly to decrees, law of attraction manifesting and prayer work. It just has a distinctly more witchy vibe to it. But it’s pretty much the same thing as a decree, but with a bit more accessorizing, you could say.

I hope that helps some of you understand the differences but also see the similarities between all of the various modalities that can be applied when working with consciously  directed energy to affect change in your world. This was just a quick overview, I will be posting more on each topic in more detail, if there’s any metaphysical or witchy topics you would like to see covered, please leave them in the comments.
